Re-opening Illustrator

September Tue 22 2009

I’ve started to use Illustrator again. I am having some serious problems with this!! What with getting used to using CS4, using a really crap mouse, and being extremely rusty, the 60 minute limit defeated me. So instead I spent 50 minutes on outline and detail, and then 10 minutes editing in Photoshop. There is a body for the horse, which is why I’ve titled this “part one”.

Horse Part One

Hopefully the next 60 minutes I spend will produce a far more effective piece.

Keeping the mind spry

September Thu 17 2009

The last couple of years of work really burned me out. I lost a lot of the thrill of designing and being creative, and I’m only starting to get it back. To keep my mind interested and active, I’ve decided to start doing these 60 minute “sketches”. Perhaps sketch isn’t the right word, but the idea is that I have a 60 minute time limit to create an unplanned design/image/sketch. I’ll aim to do one of these once a week.

This is the first one I’ve done, so it’s not that great. I’m hoping that I will soon remember all of the techniques I learned over the past five years!!! All done in Photoshop, the photo taken by me on my balcony when the birds were teasing my cats.

Are you looking at ME?

Goodbye Unworked

unworked-skye.net // Showcase

unworked-skye.net was my faithful website for 2 years. I hosted “seven” on it and it was also home to my informal portfolio called “Showcase”.

So today I have taken a snapshot of the website and its databases, and I am currently in the process of deleting everything. I have fond memories of Unworked. The website was hacked about a billion times  due to some serious laxness on my part, and in fact… because of the amount of time I’ve neglected the website (since September last year) I have only just noticed that I seem to have been hosting a serial/cracks/warez site for some time!! I almost feel bad that I’m deleting it. Hehe.

I may have grossly neglected the website for months and I admit I hated the domain name the minute I registered it, but I look back on the history of the website and I can see how much I have changed and grown. It makes me feel happy =)

Introducing…

September Wed 09 2009

I’m really excited to be launching my new website! I’ve been spending some time creating content, so bear with me while the pages are a little sparse. I’m going through all of the projects I have had a key role in over the past… six years… and will slowly build up my portfolio of work to show you all. I’m trying to back date the work so that the dates posted coincide as closely as possible to the actual work, so if post dates seem strange… i.e. before this date, that’s why!!

A few quick things to note…

This site looks best if you use Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome. It looks OK if you use Internet Explorer 8 (though there are a few little things that will look different). I battled with the idea of making this website compatible with older browsers but after a few animated arguments with myself I opted not to.

This website is powered by WordPress. It uses Dojo for font rendering and Tumblr to power the side blog. At some point I will get around to checking out all of the plugins thate exist for WordPress so that I can discover more creative ways to display my images.

Anyway, let me know if you have any major problems with the site.

weblog: Seven ways

September Tue 08 2009

My last website was called “Seven”. I used Textpattern as my content management tool, and loved it for its simplicity and ease of customisation.

When I had “Mimic”, the idea of the name was an observance of external happenings. Now I want to internalise a bit. I’m still growing and becoming something and so instead I chose a name that was perfect for me. “7”.
To be shallow, “7” is my lucky number. It’s also a “holy” number, with much meaning and many paradoxes. It is both loving and cold. Good and evil. It is two sides of the one coin – depending on which way you look at it – and this website is a reflection of both sides of me.

When I had “Mimic”, the idea of the name was an observance of external happenings. The idea of having “seven” was so that I could have a space which I could use for internal reflection. The style of seven was very different to Mimic, because the designs were less elaborate and the functionality was far more simple.

Seven – version 05Seven – version 08Seven – version 07

The bright colours remained the same as with many of the Mimic designs, but I preferred to use Photoshop to treat images and experimented more with cascading style sheets to layout the designs.
